Forgotten World, book six in the Broken World series, continues following a group of survivors after a super-virus has decimated the human race and the dead have come back to claim it as their own...

After the longest winter of her life, Vivian is thrilled to have Ginny back at her side. But joy soon turns to shock when the group learns that not only is Hope Springs in contact with other survivors, but that the CDC is working on a vaccine. And Angus could be the last hope for the human race.

With an armed escort, the group sets out on a mission to get Angus to Atlanta. But the world proves to be more dangerous than the people of Hope Springs believed, and their lack of preparation ends in deadly results. Vivian knows they must get Angus to Atlanta if they want to save the human race, but it doesn't take long to discover that this might be the most dangerous journey they have ever made. With trouble around every corner and their losses piling up, the stakes are higher than ever before.

My Take

***NOTE: This review is for the final book in a series, but there are NO MAJOR SPOILERS for the original books in the series (possible minor spoilers if you read between the lines). To see my reviews of the earlier books, click HERE.***

It’s here!! The final installment in the Broken World series!! I have such mixed feelings about this because I LOVE these characters, and I hate to see them go, but Mary managed to give us an extremely satisfying end to their journeys. (NOTE: Mary has said that, while this is the last in the series for now, she may revisit our friends sometime in the future. And she managed to wrap the story up beautifully while still leaving herself somewhere to go if she decides to head back to this world someday. It’s completely win/win!!)

  • The heartbreak. You didn’t think we were going to see this series end without losing a few more people, did you? After all, this is the zombie apocalypse, people! And, let me tell you, there were some absolutely heartbreaking moments in this book – tears were shed (well, almost – I was in a public place and trying SO hard not to start sobbing). Part of me wanted to scream, “NOOOOO! HOW COULD YOU?” while another part wanted to cheer, “KATE L. MARY, YOU ARE A DIABOLICAL GENIUS!” So, yeah. There was that.
  • Journey’s end. Like I said, Mary managed to give us resolution for our characters – she definitely didn’t leave us hanging. But with a series like this, you can’t exactly imagine a pure HEA, right? Instead, the finale gives us a hopeful look toward the future – something that our characters have been sorely lacking up until this point, seeing as how the future was looking just as bleak as the present. But, more than anything, Mary brings us personal growth and character resolution – which is what makes this series so beautiful (while also being gritty and dark). This final book in the series is told entirely from Vivian’s POV (just like the first) – and we see her complete her transformation – from a woman who felt like she had nothing and didn’t see her own self-worth, to a woman with a sense of empowerment. A woman who had everything to live for, even in the darkest times.

The negatives:

  • Pretty much nothing. I don’t know how Mary could have given these characters a more fitting end. Seriously, it was perfect.

This was exactly the heart-stopping, painfully beautiful finale I was hoping for. If you’ve been waiting for the final book in the series before you picked up the first, now’s the time. No more waiting!! This is perfect for fans of character-driven, gritty action (if you don’t mind some adult content) – I don’t know what else I can say to convince you that you need this series in your life. 5/5 stars. And this series is a definite ALL-TIME FAVORITE!

About the Author

Kate L MaryKate L. Mary is a stay-at-home mother of four and an Air Force wife. She grew up in a small town just north of Dayton, Ohio where she and her husband met at the age of twelve. Since their marriage in 2002, they have lived in Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and California.

Kate enjoys any post-apocalyptic story – especially if zombies are involved – as long as there is a romantic twist to give the story hope. Kate prefers nerdy, non-traditional heroes who can make you laugh to hunky pieces of man-meat, and her love of wine and chocolate is legendary among her friends and family. She currently resides in Oklahoma with her husband and children.

I’ve never heard of this series before but this sounds amazing, even though I’m not one for zombie stories. All the heartbreak also scares me, but I’m glad that the ending was one that was excellent for you.
    Great review, Nicole!
