Anderson’s Bookshop YA Lit Conference Recap – Keynotes by Gary D. Schmidt, Marie Lu, David Baldacci, James Dashner, Ally Carter and David Levithan

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the YA Lit Conference (and YA Fandom Frenzy) hosted by Anderson’s Bookshop. The conference day was set up as more of an informational day, with keynote speakers and panels, and the second day (Fandom Frenzy) was closer to what its name suggests – a spirited event filled with games and author speed dating. My mom went to both events with me, and my 13-year-old son also […]

The White Rose by Amy Ewing – Review

The White Rose by Amy Ewing – Review

The White Rose was the second book in The Lone City series, and it sets Violet on a path toward revolution. It picks up right where the last book left off –  Violet and Ash have just been caught together and Ash has been hauled off to await his execution while Violet has to deal with the Duchess (since she didn’t follow through with Lucien’s plan to fake her death). Well, of course, Lucien does his magic […]

Bookish Backdrops – An Ember in the Ashes

Bookish Backdrops – An Ember in the Ashes

I wanted to do something a little different around here, and I was inspired by Epic Reads’ 23 Exquisite Palettes Inspired By Our Favorite YA Book Covers. The cover and palette for An Ember in the Ashes just screamed at me for some reason! At first I thought maybe I’d do a post where you choose outfits to go with the cover, but there are lots of those out there – and I’m not all that excited […]

Top Five Reasons I Need to Start Quitting

Top Five Reasons I Need to Start Quitting

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is: Top Ten Bookish Things I Want to Quit But here’s the thing –  I DON’T quit bookish things. Almost ever. I have to force myself to DNF, even if I’m really not enjoying a book at all. That author that wrote a book I hated? But what if I love the next one? I can’t give up on them, after all. They might improve and how unfair would it be for me to judge them […]

The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow – Review

The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow – Review

The Scorpion Rules is the type of book that isn’t always easy, but the moral questions that it asks will really get you thinking. In this dystopian an AI named Talis has taken over the world by force – to save us from ourselves. This AI sees the destruction that war has caused to the human race and the earth and he decides that he can do better. So, basically, he takes hostages. Every ruling […]

Hot Button Topic: Cheating – Let’s Discuss

Hot Button Topic: Cheating – Let’s Discuss

Those of you who read my blog often know that I have a hard time with cheating in books. It doesn’t automatically make a book unreadable for me (for instance, Maybe Someday deals with cheating and is one of my all-time favorite books), but it has to be handled really well for me to accept it, and even then, it’s sort of a niggling feeling at the back of my mind that won’t go away – a […]

September Wrap-Up & a Giveaway!

September Wrap-Up & a Giveaway!

My Goings On in September: I started teaching my homeschool co-op classes: Acting, Musical Theater and 5th/6th Grade Writing. Along with the school year comes activities – my daughter continues gymnastics (four days a week for three hours each time!) and my boys start swimming twice a week. Plus, we’re doing obedience classes with our two dogs – they’re actually doing really well with it (surprise, surprise).  Throw in random doctor appointments (and eye doctor, etc), […]
