Kacey is the new girl in Broken Falls. When she moved in with her father, she stepped into a brand-new life. A life with a stepbrother, a stepmother, and strangest of all, an adoring younger half sister.

Kacey’s new life is eerily charming compared with the wild highs and lows of the old one she lived with her volatile mother. And everyone is so nice in Broken Falls—she’s even been welcomed into a tight new circle of friends. Bailey and Jade invite her to do everything with them.

Which is why it’s so odd when they start acting distant. And when they don’t invite her to the biggest party of the year, it doesn’t exactly feel like an accident.

But Kacey will never be able to ask, because Bailey never makes it home from that party. Suddenly, Broken Falls doesn’t seem so welcoming after all—especially once everyone starts looking to the new girl for answers.

Kacey is about to learn some very important lessons: Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes when you’re the new girl, you shouldn’t trust anyone.

My Take copy3

This is another one of those books that I can’t say much about because it would be way too easy to give things away. Little Monsters is something between horror and a contemporary thriller—wrapping a small-town ghost story around the mysterious disappearance of a teenage girl. Throughout the book, you find yourself wondering if there’s something paranormal going on or if the answer is much simpler than that. Kacey herself wonders that too, and the mystery becomes all-consuming for her. The more she unravels, though, the more convoluted things seem.

I have to tell you that I did not in any way guess how this book was going to turn out—I had about a hundred different theories, a few of which had some shred of partial truth to them, but I was nowhere close to figuring out what was going on. And I was blown away when it was all revealed!

In addition to the rather twisted mystery, the book had a fantastic focus on family and feeling like you belong. Kacey’s relationship with her family was complicated and messy and also immensely sweet and realistic. I loved it!

The book did take a little bit to warm up, and it also veered in a bit of a strange direction at the end—most of which I liked, but some of it seemed to border on being just a little too far out there. Still, the overall impact was completely positive, and I won’t soon forget this book.

Like I said, I don’t want to tell you too much. Just read this book, and prepare to be taken on a wild ride!

  1. I really enjoyed this one! I definitely didn’t guess how it was all going to end. The author’s debut is still my favorite, but she’s great in general – I’ll keep reading her work!

  2. OOoh nice! I still want to read this author’s first book which I received for review last year but didn’t have time for. But now I also really really want to read this one! It sounds awesome! And I am loving this almost paranormal twist! So exciting!! Glad to hear it was mostly a winner! Great review!

  3. I’ve come across a lot of good reviews for this book. Now I’m really wanting to read it. Especially after you mentioned you had no idea how it would turn out!

  4. I loved the way Thomas kept throwing twists and turns at me until the last page with The Darkest Corners, and it sounds like she does it again here. Super excited about this one!

  5. We are a bit on the opposites with this one. It hooked my interest right away but it lost me eventually. I saw through the ending halfway and Kacey is not the strong choice for me as the primary narrator. I mean, I wouldn’t even suspect her to hurt a fly even though she was called in questioning by the police lots of times. I love the parts with Bailey’s journal entries tho, those are the most chilling parts, IMO. Gave it a 3/5 stars.
