Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they'll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady's cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza's ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha's past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heros will fall, and hearts will be broken.

All contents herein are top-secret, CLASSIFIED. Read this review at your own risk. Please disregard any sections with a strikethrough. Any inappropriate language will be blacked out. (In real life, I don’t generally swear, but let’s pretend. In my head, as I’m writing this, I’m probably just saying wimpy words like frickin’, but you can imagine they’re whatever you want.)

I swear to you that this series has just gotten better and better, and this finale is Blackout2ing FANTABULOUS!! If you’ve been a fan of the series up till this point, you will not be disappointed. If you’ve been holding off on starting it because you wanted to see how the series would hold up, it’s definitely time to jump in and start reading.

The unique formatting of these books just Blackout2ing fascinates me. I especially love the pages with the text written in crazy designs that keep you guessing. Plus. Marie Liu’s illustrations are fantastic. And this book has the added Easter egg element of searching for familiar names because of the pre-order campaign. Sadly, I didn’t find my own name anywhere, but it was fun to recognize some others! Keep an eye out for some familiar author names, for instance. It’s just a fun little added bonus.

Yeah, yeah, Nicole. Get to the meat of the review. What about the story? Well, I’ll confess that it took me a little while at first to remember who was who and what had already happened in the series. But once I got past that little hump, I was Blackout2ing enthralled. If you read my review of Illuminae, you’ll remember that I felt a little detached from the narrators because of the formatting. I found that issue was mostly solved (at least for me) in GeminaIn this book, it was NO problem at all.

Trust me, I was emotionally invested.

Hopefully there is no video evidence of me sitting in bed, sobbing over this book. I’m sure it wasn’t pretty. I cried more than once. The book makes you laugh and cry, but even better, it makes you think. There are SO many repercussions each time a hard decision is made. Oh, AIDEN, you are the most wonderful, glorious, horrible Blackout2 philosophical monster in the world.

I loved that this finale brought back all of our favorite characters from the first two books, and also introduced us to some newbies. In short, the book was something close to perfection. Go. Read it.

What a fun review! Very clever. I loved Illuminae and Gemina. So excited to read Obsidio. They are a great writing team.

  2. I think it’s great when you love a series so much that book 3 is still 5-star! I do remember you mentioning that you weren’t too sure about the format of Illuminae but yay for getting that issue out of the way with Gemina! I remember putting aside Illuminae too because of the format. But I’m definitely going back to it. Especially after all your reviews 🙂

  3. Stacy Renee

Illuminae brought me out of a big reading slump and I’ve been recommending it since! Gemina was just as amazing so I am really looking forward to Obsidio!

  4. Oh I LOVE how you wrote this review ahah, you did it so well! I’m glad you enjoyed Obsidio so much – I can’t wait to read it. I was so nervous about not enjoying this series, at first, since sci-fi isn’t my usual genre, but I really liked it and I can’t wait to see how it all ends! 🙂 x

  5. Aaron Primmer

I’m reading the first book now. So far so good. I can’t wait to see what happens throughout all three books!

  6. I haven’t read the first two books yet and the hype on this series makes me want to read it too! I don’t know how I was able to put this series aside, but now it’s definitely going to be a part of my tbr pile.
