Sunday Post: Book Pre-order Campaigns & Giveaways Galore – 4/5/20

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on my blog and share news about what’s coming up in the week ahead.

This past week on FYFA (and in my life):

Hope everyone has been keeping themselves busy! We’ve been getting used to our surreal current reality. Praying that you all are staying healthy!! Here’s what we’ve been up to while stuck indoors this week:

  • Back to (online) school. I have to be pretty hands-on with my youngest, so this takes up a lot of my time. Glad for that homeschooling background!
  • We watched:
    • My daughter and I started watching Stargirl, but we just … couldn’t. Has anyone seen it? Does it get better? This was the most rampant case of Manic Pixie Dream Girl I’d seen in a very long time! (The kids switched to watching the movie version of My Hero Academia instead, and I went to go get some writing done.)
    • The whole family watched Toy Story 4 and we loved it! It felt a lot like the original to me (not meaning that the story was like the original, but it had that feeling—very sweet and nostalgiac. My oldest commented on the fact that she loved how layered the characters are and how she obviously didn’t appreciate that when she was little).
  • I read two books and a novella:
    • In the Red, which was a spectacularly exciting read—it got me back to wanting to read, which has been tough lately.
    • Then I read Efrén Divided, a wonderful immigration story.
    • Finally, I read Journey to Superhero School, a prequel novella by a high school author named Gracie Dix. I follow her on Instagram, and I was honestly just really curious to see how her writing was. The novella was very cute!
  • We played a board game: Buy It Right, which is a fantastic game for learning how to handle money. I did this with my youngest instead of just doing IXL every day—lots more interactive (and he won, so he was excited about playing.  🙂  )
  • We did more of the work on our trim for the windows in the family room.

This morning, I woke up to several Twitter notifications and was surprised to be tagged in a whole conversation going on in Japanese!

I scrolled down a bit to see that it started here:

After finally finding the translate option on Tweetdeck, I discovered that they were excited to see their idea that some of the original actors did the dubbing confirmed (not surprising by what was highlighted). This conversation seemed especially funny to me because I had just mentioned in last week’s post Google Searches Are Weird (AKA: You Found Me HOW?) that the dubbing of Netflix’s The Rain was one search that brought lots of people to my blog—and now I have confirmation that people are still reading that post from two years ago!

Here’s what you may have missed on the blog since my last Sunday Post:

  1. Look at you! You’re big in Japan. I admire all the sleuthing you do. Aww, thanks for sharing my little sloth’s post. I am sort of benefiting from the quarantine, as Kiersten has been posting stuff on the blog again. This is quite exciting for me.

  2. We really liked Toy Story 4 as well. I think I still prefer the original though. We watched Onward last night–well, my husband and I did (my daughter wasn’t too interested)–and loved it. That’s so cool that your post from a couple years ago is still so popular. 🙂 I hope you enjoy Henna Wars! It looks really good. Take care of yourself and stay safe and well.

  3. You’ve gone global! 🙂 So wild that a post from 2 years ago is still creating buzz. I feel for all the parents struggling with homeschooling. So many are not prepared for that challenge. I can’t imagine. We’ve been keeping ourselves entertained with backgammon, puzzles, cornhole, reading, and cooking together. Times are scary, but I admit I love being home together all day. Silver linings.

  4. Wow. Sounds like busy times! I remember reading Stargirl soooooooo many years ago. I’m not sure I understood it all as a younger reader. I felt like it was one of those books that bridges the gap between middle grade and YA. So was this a movie or a series that Disney+ did? I admit I didn’t even give it more than a passing glance as I was aiming for Onward! Lol! Which was cute, but it kept freezing up on me as I watched which made it harder to watch. Toy Story 4 was one I had sooo many mixed emotions over. I remember I wrote what was part review, part rant over what happened. I think I remembered liking and not liking how it ended and really not caring for Bonnie anymore! That she happily kept a spork for two years with google eyes but didn’t even notice Woody going missing tore at my heart. I know Woody made his choices, but I was a wreck over that!

Nice new read! that’s a new to me one! I hope you enjoy it! Happy Reading this week!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

  5. That’s kind of hilarious about the Twitter chain. People are reading that post still – that’s fantastic. I’m glad you have a home school background so you aren’t too overwhelmed with the kids learning from home. Yay for reading some fun books – I’m slowly getting into reading again. It can be tough to focus.

  6. Have you or your daughter read Stargirl? I haven’t seen the movie yet but I absolutely loved the book. To me, it seems to be a lot less cliche than what the movie appears to be like. A random waitress at a restaurant recommended it to me and I haven’t regretted it!

  7. I envy your homeschool background. I’ve been trying to teach my daughter, and it’s been especially challenging, since she has special needs, and we’ve both been sick. We haven’t seen Stargirl, but enjoyed Toy Story 4. I agree about it being nostalgic, and love your daughter’s observation about the characters having many layers. You must be proud 🙂 The Henna Wars looks super cute! I hope you love it! Have a wonderful week 🙂

  8. It’s such a different world all of a sudden, isn’t it? Glad you have some homeschooling background at least t help with it. I know lots of people are struggling with that adjustment.

I love that tweet about The rain! Haha you just never know how people are going to find your blog, or what posts will get attention later on down the line!

    Be safe this week!!

  9. That is so funny you ended up in Japanese tweets!! ? And speaking of Japanese, one of my brothers really loves My Hero Academia! I’ve been meaning to watch it but haven’t really been in the mood for superhero-y stuff, but I will get to it eventually! Which is the exact same thing I say about ALL of my books in my tbr pile ?

  10. I’m sure your homeschooling experience really is helping the situation now. I used to catch what my kids were watching while cooking or doing chores. Now I get the all the Disney/Pixar flicks because of my grandchildren. Well, not much lately. I miss them!

That’s so funny your post from 2 years ago attracted attention from Japan! Happy reading and stay safe, Nicole! 🙂

LOL that conversation on twitter is epic!

That’s great your background in homeschool is helping so much! I bet a lot of parents wish they had some of that haha

Take care hon! And be safe 🙂

  12. Glad you had a good week! I have been meaning to watch Toy Story 4 and I am glad you could enjoy it so much. I also really want to watch My Hero Academia as everyone seems to love it but I do want to read the manga first. And I have heard such good things about The Henna Wars so happy reading for that one.
