I’ve got four reviews for you today: a YA fantasy a YA contemp, and two MG graphic novels. I hope these bite-sized reviews will be enough to feed your fiction addiction! First off, I didn’t realize when I started reading this that the series is a duology. So I was expecting perhaps a bit of middle-book syndrome and was surprised when the book didn’t feel sluggish in the least. In fact, I found myself eager to read this book every chance I got. The book starts out with Kazi very hurt and in captivity and then moves back a couple of weeks to show us how she got there. So, of course, I was eagerly reading to find out what happened and how she was separated from Jase. Surprisingly, it wasn’t one of those cases where it took us half the book to get back to where we’d started, though. No,… Read more »

Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson: A Spectacular Spin-Off!

Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson: A Spectacular Spin-Off!

Reviews 16 ★★★★½

I can’t tell you how excited I was to see that Pearson was revisiting the Remnant Chronicles universe! This book takes place several years after the conclusion of the original series. You definitely don’t have to have read the original series to understand what’s going on in this one, but I LOVED it, so I highly recommend reading it for the background history. Some of the characters make appearances in this book. What Fed My Addiction: Thief turned warrior. Kazi is an accomplished thief who crosses the queen. I love that, instead of punishing her, the queen sees Kazi’s potential and puts her into her elite royal guard. Kazi has a tragic backstory that we learn as the story unfolds. Her sense of loyalty to the queen combined with her own search for vengeance against the man who sent her tragic story into motion—and anyone who would take advantage of the weak—make her… Read more »

Bite-Sized Reviews of the Rest of the Books I Read in 2016 (Including The Beauty of Darkness and Glass Sword)

Bite-Sized Reviews of the Rest of the Books I Read in 2016 (Including The Beauty of Darkness and Glass Sword)

Reviews 12

Okay, so I might be exaggerating a little bit with that title—I’m not actually reviewing all of the rest of the books I read in 2016, but I am reviewing most of them. The only holdouts are a couple of books that I plan to review along with future books in the series and a couple that are releasing next week (which I’ll review then). Oh, and I’m still reading and the month isn’t quite over, so … Anyway, hopefully these bite-sized reviews will be enough to feed your fiction addiction! This was everything I was hoping for in a series finale. Even though the romance was rocky (and I was very scared for Rafe and Lia), it seemed realistic. After all, these two both had a strong sense of responsibility for their kingdoms (and Lia for Venda as well because of the prophecy). This put them at odds sometimes because it was… Read more »

The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson – Review

The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson – Review

Reviews 31 ★★★★★

The Heart of Betrayal is the second book in the Remnant Chronicles, and it’s just as heart stopping as the first! I adored Kiss of Deception, but a lot of that was because I was so blown away by the character twist – I wondered if it was possible for the second book to measure up now that we’d gotten that twist out of the way. Well, it did. Have to say that I enjoyed pretty much every minute of reading this book! What fed my addiction: Betrayal. The book is aptly named. There’s a lot of betrayal going on – and Lia herself doles out her fair share. There is nothing she won’t do to get herself and Rafe out of Venda, and she’ll lie through her teeth if that’s what it takes to do it. A lot of that lying is aimed at Kaden. You can’t help but feel a… Read more »

5 Star ARC Review – Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

5 Star ARC Review – Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

All-Time Favorites, Reviews 1 ★★★★★

I absolutely LOVED this book!!  Not only was it an intriguing fantasy novel, but it had a huge twist that completely threw me!The synopsis explains the book well, so I’m just going to get straight to my review. The negatives: Light on magic.  For a fantasy novel, this one was actually pretty light on magic and fantastical elements.  First daughters in this world were supposed to have “the gift,: which is basically an ability to see the future.  Lia has hints of this gift, but nothing extreme, so we don’t see much of it.  There are other fantasy elements, but people who like their fantasy to be full of magical happenings might be disappointed. What I loved: Lia.  I loved Lia as a main character.  She was strong and determined, but not without flaws. In some ways she was selfish – after all, she put her own happiness above the… Read more »
