Let’s Discuss (Halloween Edition) – Do You Believe in the Supernatural?

Let’s Discuss (Halloween Edition) – Do You Believe in the Supernatural?

Let's Discuss 18

Have you heard? You can purchase a zombie-proof cabin! Yep, the ZFC-1 Zombie Fortification Cabin has everything you’ll need in case of a zombie apocalypse – barbed wire, arsenal storage, garden area, escape hatch, kitchen, gym, and (of course) an Xbox so that your kids can enjoy shooting zombies in the comfort of their own home while you’re in the gym. It’s a real thing! Honestly, you can buy one! My friend is an OT and she was telling me not long ago that some of the kids she works with have told her that their parents have an emergency plan in place for a zombie apocalypse. I laughed it off at first, but she insisted that they were very serious. So, I got to thinking – are there things that seem crazy to some of us, but not so crazy to others? Well, yeah. So, do I believe in the supernatural?… Read more »

Review & Giveaway – The Collectors’ Society by Heather Lyons

Review & Giveaway – The Collectors’ Society by Heather Lyons

All-Time Favorites, Giveaways (Ended), Reviews 15 ★★★★★

This book completely blew me away! I knew that it was a retelling of some sort based on Alice in Wonderland, but that was about all I knew when I started reading. Well, what I discovered was a book that was completely unique and compelling in so many more ways than I can even begin to explain – I LOVED it! It’s hard for me to review this book properly because I SO don’t want to give too much away. There were so many delightful surprises, and I loved discovering them all along the way. So, I’ll do my best to sum up why I loved the book without giving away details. What I LOVED: Crazy-strong heroine. Alice is all grown up, and she’s no pushover. She’s seen a few (million) things, and let’s just say her experiences have left their mark. Alice can take care of herself – and she doesn’t… Read more »

Top Ten Books to Read for Halloween

Top Ten Books to Read for Halloween

Top Ten Tuesday 34

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is: Top Ten Books to Read for Halloween These are my top ten horror-related books. I don’t usually read pure horror, but lately I’ve gotten into zombie books (and I’ve always loved books about witches and vampires). There are so many good ones! Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini – Loved this book, and it involves witches – perfect Halloween reading! The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle – Zombies combined with Amish characters and an Amish setting! How crazy (and fun!) is that?! Broken World by Kate L. Mary – This self-pubbed zombie book is a true gem!! Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion – Actually, watch the movie too. This is one of the few cases where I felt like the movie may have outshone the book! It by Stephen King – I read this one as a teenager and I remember it scared the bejeezus out of me!… Read more »

ARC Review & Giveaway – Bloodrealms by Aurora Whittet

ARC Review & Giveaway – Bloodrealms by Aurora Whittet

Giveaways (Ended), Reviews 17 ★★★★

***This review is for book #2 in the series and may contain spoilers for the first book.  Check out my review of Bloodmark HERE and scroll down for a chance to win it!*** This second installment of The Bloodmark Saga is even more intense and exciting than the first! In this book, Ashling is dreading the day that Grey has to fight her other three suitors for her hand in marriage. She knows who she wants (kind of – there is some wavering, but I’ll talk about that later), but she feels powerless in a werewolf society where she has no power, despite the fact that she is prophesied to lead. Meanwhile, Ashling is also still trying to emotionally recover from Adomnan’s attack. She doesn’t know if she feels strong enough to rule her own life, much less her pack’s – but when the stakes are highest, she finds the strength… Read more »

Release Day Review & Giveaway – Stan by C.J. Duggan

Release Day Review & Giveaway – Stan by C.J. Duggan

Giveaways (Ended), Reviews 15 ★★★★

***This review is for book #1.5 in the series, but doesn’t really contain any spoilers for the first book.  Check out my reviews of the other books that have been released so far: The Boys of Summer    An Endless Summer   That One Summer   Ringer*** I so adore this series. I don’t know what about it captures my heart – the Australian setting, the 90’s vibe (I was these characters’ age during this same time period, so I definitely relate), the sweet and lovable characters with incredible chemistry – probably a combination of all of these! When I saw that Stan was coming out, I was chomping at the bit to get it, and I was not disappointed! Loved it, just like the rest of the books! What I LOVED: A satisfying novella. I tend to get done with a novella and feel like I didn’t quite get to know the characters well enough, simply because… Read more »

Sunday Post & Giveaways Galore – 10/26/14

Sunday Post 7

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on my blog and share news about what’s coming up in the week ahead. Last week on FYFA: This past week I was a bit scarce because I got sick, and spent a few days feeling miserable with a sore throat and fever! On the positive side, I got a lot of reading done since I spent one of the days basically in bed all day! There’s a bright side to everything, right? Here’s what you may have missed last week: Fierce Reads Tour (recap & giveaway) Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout (review) Let’s Discuss – Are the Number of Followers You Have Important to You? Stan by C.J. Duggan (release day review & giveaway) – This post is actually going… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – Are the Number of Followers You Have Important to You?

Let’s Discuss – Are the Number of Followers You Have Important to You?

Let's Discuss 48

I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot lately and considering writing a post about it. Then I saw that Ashley over at NoseGraze posted a discussion about Why “Follow Backs” Are Pointless and it inspired me even more. Ashley made some great points, but I actually don’t agree with her overall message – that soliciting followers is always a bad thing. I honestly think that, especially for newer blogs, follow backs are the best way to get your name and your brand out there – for people to know you exist and to stick with you. But what does your number of followers really mean? Is there such a thing as too many? Too few? What are the best ways to get them (and keep them)? I have over 2000 Bloglovin’ followers, but that doesn’t mean that over 2000 people are looking at all of my posts. (I wish!) So, does… Read more »

Release Day Review – Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Day Review – Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Reviews 17 ★★★★½

***This review is for book #2 in the series, and may contain spoilers for the first book.  Check out my review White Hot Kiss HERE.*** I SO love this series, and I don’t know if I can stand waiting until book #3 to find out how it all ends! I can’t believe that Armentrout is allowing her fans to choose who Layla is going to end up with. It’s crazy and unprecedented and all sorts of awesome!! (Scroll down to read more about voting for Roth or Zayne!) In this second book in The Dark Elements trilogy, Layla is mourning after what happened with Roth at the end of White Hot Kiss. So, she’s not really expecting to fall for Zayne. But when Roth shows back up and tells her that everything they shared meant nothing to him, she turns to the one person who’s always been there for her. Meanwhile,… Read more »

Fierce Reads Tour Recap & Giveaway – With Marissa Meyer, Nikki Kelly, Gennifer Albin & Jessica Brody

Book Events, Giveaways (Ended) 25

On October 10th, I headed out to the Arlington Heights Public Library to the Fierce Reads tour. This tour was incredible because the authors were obviously just having SO much fun!  I thought I’d share a few highlights and pictures: Just look at that awesome cake (the picture up at the top). Isn’t it fun?! Gennifer Albin is bloodthirsty. And hilarious. She had me laughing the whole time. One example: apparently, she is constantly thinking about how she could die in any circumstance (things like, “If that beam right there suddenly broke, it would take my head off.”). Yep, just a little crazy! Marissa Meyer talked about how she came up with the idea for Cinder because she had a Cinderella dream where the girl’s whole foot fell off instead of just her shoe. She immediately thought, “She’s a cyborg!” Jessica Brody was inspired to write Unremembered when she read about… Read more »
