I’m heading off to Utah very early tomorrow morning for the Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers writing workshop! I’m not planning on updating the blog while I’m there (unless I’m feeling especially inspired) because I want to focus on the conference as much as I can.
Things about WIFYR I’m looking forward to:
- Meeting Trent Reedy. Have you read Words in the Dust? If you haven’t you need to. Absolutely fabulous! I know I’m going to learn a lot from Trent!
- A week spent with other writers. These are my people! I can’t wait to talk writing with them.
- My critiques. I’m excited to get feedback from a whole group of people, and I’m hoping some of us will keep up the relationships after the conference.
- The conference sessions. In the mornings, our group will be critiquing, but in the afternoons, there are lots of break-out groups to choose from. They all look so good—it will be hard to choose!
- Meeting editors and agents. You never know, right? Maybe I’ll meet the perfect person for my book.
- A whole week to myself. Okay, technically I’ll be surrounded by people, so it’s not like I’ll be by myself. But I’ll confess that I’m pretty excited to have a week away from home to focus 100% on writing. I will be doing no dishes, no laundry, no cleaning up after anyone. I won’t have to let any dogs out, or drive kids to any activities, or fill out mounds of paperwork so the kids can go to camp. Yeah, a lot of it will be waiting for me when I get home, but it will be nice to have a week off!
Since I’m not doing BEA or ALA this year, this is my chance to get bookish, and I can’t wait!
Have fun!
Thanks!!
Have a great time!
Thanks!!
I can’t wait to hear about your retreat when you get back!!!!! It sounds so exciting, and I’m so excited for you!
It was fantastic! Now I just have to figure out the best way to post about it!
I love BEA and ALA because you are surrounded by book people, so I imagine a writing conference would be wonderful. I’d love to actually have a week to just write and talk writing. Have fun!

Yes! Just being able to sit around and talk about writing and my book with other people who are writing seriously was amazing!
Have a great time! I totally understand what you’re saying about a week to yourself. I’m going to BEA in a couple weeks, and even though my days will be busy, and I’ll be in New Orleans!, I am going to enjoy having a nice room to myself. Like you, the no dogs to deal with is a big thing. Then in July I’m going to the Book Bonanza convention in Denver, which I’ll drive by myself there. I had someone who I don’t know, but lives near me that asked to maybe ride with me. But I’m looking forward to the long drive alone, listening to an audiobook. Plus a hotel room to myself! Can’t wait to hear all about your writing conference when you get back!
Sometimes a little alone time is just what we need, right? I was pretty busy at the conference, but I did take a little time by myself as well!
You might not have time to blog while your away (totally fine, just took a break myself), but I can’t wait to see what you have to say about your trip when you get back! It sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun. 🙂

Yes, blogging was definitely put on the back burner during the conference, but it was worth it!
Have a great time, and good luck with feedback and networking! 🙂
Thanks, Greg!
Ahhh have fun! Can’t wait to hear all about it when you’re back.
Thanks! I learned so much, and I can’t wait to share about the conference!
Have an absolutely amazing time!!!
Thanks, Jen!!
EEEP THIS IS SO EXCITING!!! I hope you learn a lot, and maybe even get an agent!
It was a great experience! I learned a lot and I did have a small press editor ask me to send in my submission. Who knows? Maybe something will come of it!
Hope you’re having an amazing time! Looking forward to reading all about your conference when you’re back with us 🙂
Thank you! The conference was fantastic and I’m excited to share it with all of you!
