Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the second book in Graci Kim's magical and mysterious Gifted Clans trilogy.
"Graci Kim does such an amazing job of blending Korean mythology into the modern world, I am now wondering how I ever lived without knowing all this cool information."--New York Times #1 best-selling author Rick Riordan
For Riley Oh, life as the Godrealm’s last fallen star is not all it’s cracked up to be. Her new divine heritage doesn’t even come with cool magical powers; half of her friends and family (including her parents) can’t remember her; and to top it all off, the entire Gom clan is mad at her for killing the Cave Bear Goddess and stripping away their healing abilities.
But when their anger boils over and a group of witches curse Riley’s home, she knows it’s up to her to restore magic back to her clan – even if it means sneaking into the Spiritrealm.
Luckily, Riley has some backup. Along with her sister, Hattie, Riley meets Dahl, a heaven-born boy with shockingly white hair and a fondness for toilets who might not be telling the whole truth about who he is. Together they’ll fight vicious monsters, discover dark underwater worlds, and race to save the land of the dead from a fate that no one could have foreseen.
And this time, Riley won’t let anything get in her way. Because she can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is coming their way – and the gifted community is going to need all the powers they can get.

This second book in the Gifted Clans Series finds our heroine once again trying to find a way to fit in amongst her people. You’d think saving humanity would have won everyone over, but Riley now finds herself up against new obstacles. First off, in the act of saving the world, she also removed the Gom clan’s healing powers, and the clan is not at all pleased. And this time she doesn’t even have the love and devotion of her family and friends to fall back on since no one remembers her. Riley feels like she’s only made things worse for everyone, and she’s bound and determined to fix things. This leads her on a journey to the Spiritrealm to find an honorary god who she believes can restore the Gom clan’s healing abilities. There she learns that being undocumented in the underworld comes with some real disadvantages. She almost gives up hope until she meets a mysteriously quirky janitor boy named Dahl with a thirst for adventure. Dahl immediately agrees to help her on her quest, and it turns out he can be quite resourceful! Dahl is definitely my favorite new character in the series—he adds humor and intrigue to the story! Of course, Korean mythology is featured heavily in the Spiritrealm (with Kim’s own unique and very fun twists!). Riley has to avoid a sentence in one of the versions of (vacation?) hell, face down Korean versions of helldogs and mermaids, and take a dip into the corrupted waters of the Spring of Eternal Life. Along the way, she learns more about her own heritage, including uncovering a secret she never imagined!
No second-book syndrome here—the pacing is spot-on and Riley’s personal journey is compelling. The book also has a complete story arc while still leaving us plenty to look forward to in book three. This series is perfect for kids who love magic, mythology and adventure!

I can’t wait to read this book too! I love the cover and premise.
This one sounds like a lot of fun! And I love when book #2 isn’t just filler.

The book sounds amazing, and I love the cover.
This sounds adorable. I love the premise too.
This sounds really fun! I’m looking forward to reading this series.
Love your opening line: “You’d think saving humanity would have won everyone over…” Funny how often that turns out not to be the case! This sounds like a really fun and original story, glad it didn’t fall into the second-book syndrome. I’m always impressed when writers can create a coherent series in which the books can also stand alone.
The cover is stunning and this sounds like a great sequel!
Glad this was just as good as the first!
Looking forward to reading the sequel.
