It Started With Goodbye by Christina June: Review, Giveaway, and June’s Top Ten Addictions

This book was exactly what I was hoping for—a fun contemporary twist on Cinderella that reminds us that sometimes family is complicated. And that’s okay. What Fed My Addiction: Focus on family. Sure this book has a cute romance element, but the story focuses a whole lot more on family issues than it does on the “prince.” (Actually, now that I think about it, I guess the original Cinderella kind of did too.) Tatum learns that sometimes we don’t really know even the people who are closest to us. Tatum has spent most of her life feeling like she can’t live up to her stepmother’s expectations and she’s never been close to her all-too-perfect stepsister. Dream Magic by Joshua Khan: Review & Khan’s Top Ten Addictions

Dream Magic is great fun and highly imaginative. I wish I’d read the first book on the series, though—when the book was offered to me, I was told it was the second in a series, but that it was a standalone, and that was sort of true, in the sense that it had it’s own story arc, but it was definitely a continuation of the first book. On the positive side, it wasn’t confusing at all—Khan did a great job of “reminding” readers what had already happened, but I was missing a connection to those events (and the characters that went with them). Still, considering that, it’s actually amazing that I enjoyed the book so much—which is a testament to Khan’s storytelling skills. What Fed My Addiction: Complete story arc. Seven Days of You by Cecilia Vinesse: Review & Vinesse’s Top Ten Addictions

Apparently, I’m on a Japan reviewing kick right now since just yesterday I featured the Miso Cozy Mysteries, which have a Japanese MC and take place in Japan. This book takes place there too (but it’s just a fun coincidence I’m reviewing them back-to-back). Still it’s not a coincidence that I’m reading a lot of books that involve this country lately—I’ve become sort of fascinated with all things Japanese lately! This book is a super cute read that tugs at your heartstrings and digs into some deeper issues without getting too heavy. It features friendships and family relationships and romance all set against the backdrop of Tokyo. What Fed My Addiction: Japan! Bite Sized Reviews of the Miso Cozy Series by S.J. Pajonas (& Pajonas’s Top Ten Addictions)

The Miso Cozy Series is a mystery series set in Japan. We were introduced to our intrepid daydreamer detective Mei in the first book in the series, which I’ve already reviewed (click the link to see it), so I was eager to read the next few books to see how poor Mei fared after all the tragedy that struck at the end of book 1. I read books 2, 2.5, and 3 and wanted to give my readers a chance to discover this series if they haven’t already. This unique contemporary romance shines the spotlight on cultural differences and the ways that we sometimes judge based on expectation rather than reality. Set in Haiti, the book focuses on the country’s beauty rather than its drawbacks. What Fed My Addiction: Haiti! I’ve been to Haiti three times—twice in the process of adopting my son and once when I escorted a baby girl with spina bifida who we had hosted back home to her momma. So, I have a special connection with the country and I could truly relate to Myra’s thoughts and feelings when she arrives in Port au Prince. Despite the cute cover and the whimsical title, this book isn’t simply a frivolous romp through time—it has a surprising amount of heart and even heartbreak. The story tells of Al, who receives a letter from his father four years after his father’s death. The letter reveals that Al can essentially bring his father back to life by traveling back in time and preventing an accident that happened all the way back when his father was twelve years old. Of course, at first Al is skeptical, but he soon discovers that it just might be true. Unfortunately, changing the past isn’t quite as simple as it seems, and Al finds himself questioning whether or not changing the past could destroy his future. Ellie’s left her grifter life behind, but when her best friend Simon commits suicide, she can’t let things go. She needs to figure out what happened that night, why he was pushed so far—or if it was truly a suicide at all. Out of Play is the sort of book that deals with tough issues really well but doesn’t completely mangle your heart in the process. Not that I’m not a fan of the occasional heart-mangling (you know I love a good cry now and then), but I think it’s great to have books that tackle these types of issues in a somewhat lighter, more accessible manner as well. A book that gives you the feels, but doesn’t tear you to shreds in the process. This is that book.
