September Random Read – Black Amaranth by Sasha Hibbs

September Random Read – Black Amaranth by Sasha Hibbs

Random Reads 7

It’s time for my September Random Reads selection (a fun meme hosted by I’m Loving Books). The idea is to pick one random book from your Goodreads To-Read list (using Random.org) to read within the month. As I mention every month, I am in love with this meme! This is such a great way to make sure that I actually read some of those books that have been in my TBR list for eons. This month I decided to continue with just choosing one Random Read. I limited my Random Read choices to books that I actually own since I have so many of them that I’ve been wanting to read. (I did this by just creating a Random Reads shelf on Goodreads). I really enjoyed last month’s Random Read – Scorched by Mari Mancusi. I was so glad that the book lived up to its pretty cover!  🙂  You can read my… Read more »

Random Reads Review – Scorched by Mari Mancusi

Random Reads Review – Scorched by Mari Mancusi

Random Reads, Reviews 11 ★★★★½

I bought this book when I went to the Barbara Vey Reader’s Luncheon back in April. I have to confess that it was the cover that really drew me in. Mari was super sweet and she was so excited over the cover – the actual hardcover (under the sleeve) is texturized and feels like dragon scales!  Plus it’s awesomely beautiful. I also bought Mancusi’s The Blood Coven Vampires, so watch for a review of that one coming up at some point (has anyone read this series?). Anyway, back to Scorched. I was excited when this one popped up as my Random Read because I’ve been wanting to read it – I’m a big fan of dragon books! The book is told from three perspectives – Trinity, who is Fire Kissed and destined to unleash dragons on the world; and twin brothers Connor and Caleb, who have traveled back in time to… Read more »

It’s time for my June Random Reads (a fun meme hosted by I’m Loving Books). The idea is to pick one random book from your Goodreads To-Read list (using Random.org) to read within the month.  As I mention every month, I am in love with this meme!  This is such a great way to make sure that I actually read some of those books that have been in my TBR list for eons. This month I decided to once again choose two Random Reads.  For the first, I limited my Random Read choices to books that I actually own since I have so many of them that I’ve been wanting to read.  (I did this by just creating a Random Reads shelf on Goodreads).  I planned to use my general TBR for the second choice, but ended up using a book that I didn’t actually own from the Random Reads list (since it got chosen… Read more »

Random Reads Review – The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

Random Reads Review – The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

Random Reads, Reviews 2 ★★★★½

The Golem and the Jinni is a beautifully written tale that combines fantasy with history. It’s a story of life and longing and of the desire to truly break free.  When the book was chosen as my May Random Read, I was excited because I’d had a chance to meet the author and hear her speak about the exhaustive research that she put into this book.  It truly showed.  I was not disappointed! The negatives: Slightly slow in the beginning.  This book is a bit closer to literary fiction than I typically read, which is wonderful – I’m trying to expand my horizons a bit and this book fit the bill perfectly.  But it’s definitely a slow-building story.  I was expecting this to be a story about Chava and Ahmad together, but it was a long time before they even met. The story also seemed to go off on tangents… Read more »
