Goodreads’ YA Books Lists. Let’s Discuss.

Posted August 8, 2018 by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction in Let's Discuss / 57 Comments

For their celebration of YA Week, Goodreads created a few lists specific to YA. I know I just did a post on Goodreads Mid-Year lists, but I couldn’t resist checking these out too. I was curious how many of the books I’d read.

CLICK ON THE CATEGORY HEADINGS TO SEE THE LISTS ON GOODREADS.

100 Top YA Books:

This is an all-time list that Goodreads came up with using books that are most often on shelves and their ratings.

  • I’ve read 54. (And I’m reading The Book Thief now, so I’m almost at 55. Plus, I just got Crank from the library yesterday.)
  • I had 19 of them on my Goodreads TBR. (10 of which I own but haven’t read yet.)
  • 9 books weren’t technically on my TBR, but I probably plan to read them at some point.
  • There were 18 books I either hadn’t heard of or had no real desire to read.

Just a few of my favorites from the list:

45 Hidden Gems for YA Superfans:

Some of these didn’t seem very “hidden” to me, but they used the criteria that they had to be rated 200,000 times or less (as compared to the 6 million reviews that The Hunger Games has).

  • I’ve read 19.
  • I had 11 of them on my Goodreads TBR. (9 of which I own but haven’t read yet.)
  • 7 books weren’t technically on my TBR, but I probably plan to read them at some point.
  • There were 8 books I either hadn’t heard of or had no real desire to read.

A few of my favorites:

The Most Anticipated YA Books for the Rest of the Year:

For this list, Goodreads looked at the number of times a book has been put on shelves and the rating. There were 18 total books on the list.

Since I haven’t been requesting as many review books this year, I haven’t kept up with the most anticipated books!

  • I’ve read 0.
  • I had 4 of them on my Goodreads TBR. (2 of which I have for review but haven’t read yet. And 1 more that I just signed up for the tour for yesterday, and I’m crossing my fingers that I get it!)
  • 2 books weren’t technically on my TBR, but I probably plan to read them at some point (they’re sequels to books I haven’t read yet).
  • There were 12 books I either hadn’t heard of or had no real desire to read. But, let’s face it, this will probably change as soon as reviews start rolling in.

A few of the ones I’m anticipating:

The Best YA Books of 2018 (So Far):

For this list, Goodreads looked at the number of times a book has been put on shelves and the rating. There were 29 total books on the list.

  • I’ve read 6.
  • I had 8 of them on my Goodreads TBR. (6 of which I own but haven’t read yet.)
  • 4 books weren’t technically on my TBR, but I probably plan to read them at some point.
  • There were 11 books I either hadn’t heard of or had no real desire to read.

  1. Woohoo, 54% is a huge chunk! You’re like a YA Super Champion or something. I’ve only read 8 out 100 which is, yikes!!! I have the contemporaries down on my TBR. I just wish I have more time to read those that I already own. YA fantasies or dystopia and other YA series, I don’t read so much from so I don’t have them on my TBR at all. Some of my faves in the list are One of Us is Lying, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Jellicoe Road, Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour 🙂

  2. Wow you have read quite a few of these! Now I want to play too! I am only going to do the ones I have read because why not? I read 40 of the Top 100- though I will say that not a ton that I haven’t read are on my TBR? Maybe like, 20 more? So I am probably skipping more like 40 of them, and frankly, I am not sorry ?

I read 17 of the “Hidden Gems” though I kind of agree that they are not that hidden hahah.

Most Anticipated… I also read zero. I plan on reading Sadie just as soon as my friend finally sends me the books she’s been holding hostage haha. And a lot of the others on that list I do want to read too!

Best of 2018. I read 11 (I think this means I finally won a round, because this is obviously a competition but only in my own mind). BUT I didn’t like some of them very much oops?

This was such a fun post, Nicole!!

  3. Well this is interesting. I think I need to check out the lists. I kinda want to read the darkest Minds… I wonder how many more I’ll find that I end up adding. 🙂

  4. I’ve read 38 of the top 100, 2 of the hidden gems, and 3 of the 2018 releases. I’m bad at reading what everybody else reads. A lot of those books are on my TBR list, though, so I’ll get to them sometime in the next millennium.

  5. It was a lot of fun seeing where I stood on these lists. 47 of the top 100. There are a ton of fantasy books on that list, so I probably won’t read them, though I saw maybe contemporaries I still need to tackle. Only 12 of the hidden gems, but I own a bunch, which I will definitely read. I had 9 of the anticipated books on my TBR, but sadly, only have 2 of them. Fun, interactive post.

  6. It was really interesting to see how you personally broke down those GR lists! I haven’t scrolled through them myself, mostly because my TBR is large enough already and I know that would only add to it! One I’m also looking forward to is Shadow of the Fox 🙂

  7. It’s the list season! I do not read a lot of YA but I definitely enjoyed Cinder (and all the other books) and All the Bright Places (I CRIED SO MUCH). I will check out some of these lists and maybe find some gems too.

Great List! I appreciate how you rated and categorized them. I think I have about 10 so far, and of course want 10 more, at least. I have one that you should definitely consider picking up, The Selah Branch by Ted Neil. It’s time travel book that entertains, while speaking important truth to social injustices in the past and present.Ted Neil is a phenomenal author, a human being striving to better the world through action. His bio is worth reading and his work, absolutely worth checking out. I found more here, http://www.tenebraypress.com

  9. This is such a great idea for a post- I’m curious to see how many books I’ve read off of these lists too. Goodreads lists are often hit or miss for me- I like using the upcoming lists to find new books for my TBR, but a lot of their YA recommendation type lists always seem to have them same books featured over and over again…

  10. I’ve read 31! And I’ve got 8 on my TBR, 4 of which I own, but keep dragging my feet on reading. It makes me so happy that Vampire Academy (one of my all time favs) is still so popular.

  11. i bought “all our yesterdays” at the dollar store! Hard cover! I couldn’t believe it! It is so pretty I want to frame it. Happy to see it among your favorites. I cannot wait to read it when I can read again. I’m listening to Kiss of Deception this week [so I can understand Dance Thieves] so happy to see it among your favs too 🙂

  12. To be honest, I only ever really check out the lists when I am trying to read more of a specific genre, and then see what happen to be the best ones for those genres. But it’s so impressive that you’ve read a large percentage for most of these lists! And I see quite a few of my favourites in there too, like Cinder, The Raven Boys, All the Bright places, Children of Blood and Bone and This Savage Song. A lot of them are on my TBR.

Such a great idea, I confess as well, I need to be better at checking out Goodreads. Also, I saw the comment on the Selah Branch by Ted Neill. My boyfriend just told me about that one! I may have to check it out! Happy reading everyone!
