Top Ten Backlist Books I Want to Read

I really will only post ten, even though I could easily choose about a million (as the title to this post implies).

For this list, I’m only using books that are over two years old. Just because. And only books I own. The list could still be MUCH longer.

1.Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

Susan Dennard’s writing resources are amazing, and I own her books. Why haven’t I read her yet? There is no logic that can explain it.

2. Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes

Another author I’ve inexplicably never read even though I’m pretty sure I’d love her books.

3. The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

I might lose blogger friends if I don’t read this soon—specifically, Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight. I mean, she’s been patient with me, but there are limits.

4. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

My secret sister got me this book and I was SO excited to read it. Yet it’s been hanging out on my shelf for three years.

5. The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

I own the whole original trilogy. My daughter read it and really enjoyed it, but I still haven’t picked it up.

6. Confess by Colleen Hoover

Somewhere along the line, I started getting scared that I don’t love Hoover’s books anymore. I don’t even know that the feeling is based on anything real—I think there were two books that disappointed me a little (but so many more that I LOVED). I need to get over it and keep reading.

7. Alienated by Melissa Landers

I think I might have put this on a list or two in the past. For some reason, the idea of this book fascinates me, but I still haven’t read it.

8. Legend by Marie Lu

Now that I’ve finally read a Marie Lu series (Warcross), I need to pick up her older books, which are ALL calling to me from my shelves.

9. Tiger’s Curse by Colleen Houck

Once again, I own the whole series. Haven’t read any of them, though. Makes sense, right?

10. Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Everyone and their uncle loves this book. I’m guessing I will too when I get around to reading it.

What books have you been overlooking for far too long? Are there any of these that I absolutely MUST read? I want to know!

  1. Of course, I’m going to go with Tiger’s Curse. I haven’t read or got the newest book or the novella. I have the School for Good and Evil on my shelf to unread. I watched Books and Jams 2018 TBR video and am tempted to do the same. She came up with 10 genres and put 5 books in each category. I think it was only books she had prior to that year on her shelf.I definitely would not do 50 though. I’m luckly to read at least 30 a year. I’ve read like 39ish, but some include novellas.

    • I used to do a meme called Random Reads where it would randomly pick books from my TBR to read. I loved it, but I somehow ended up eventually abandoning it. Maybe I need to get back to it. (Though now my monthly Make Me Read It Giveaway serves pretty much the same purpose.)

  2. Danielle Hammelef

Girl Against the Universe is one of my favorite books of all time. It’s a hug inside a book (is that weird to say?). Serpent King was also really good. I haven’t read the others, but I have WAY too many books I’ve left unread.

  3. I LITERALLY bought Carry On the week it came out – maybe even the day, I don’t remember – and I still need to read it. So yes, that will be happening soon. I’m very excited that there will be a sequel too though! And I don’t own, but still want to read, The Serpent King. I really liked his book Goodbye Days. But seriously, there are so many books I need to read…and many that I even own and I haven’t read yet!

  4. The Serpent King is one of my FAVORITES! Gosh! I love that book. Legend is one of my all-time favorite series, and there are more books being added to that series. I loved the first Alienated book, but the rest of the series didn’t dazzle me as much. Gracling is another great series. I also have GATU on my list today. I actually bought the book this year, so it’s looking really promising for me.

  5. Serpent King! Serpent King! Serpent King!

    Graceling! Graceling! Graceling!

I loved Carry On too, and like Girl Against the Universe and Legend. Neither Tiger’s Curse nor Truthwitch did much for me, but I have a huge soft spot for Colleen Houck because she visited my school twice (for free!) when her nephew was attending. Also, I read Stokes’s latest the other night and it was GREAT.

  6. Haven’t read any from your list. And dang, I wasn’t able to make my own TTT list this week but if I had, I also will most definitely include GATU, The Serpent King and Carry On.

  7. I read The Serpent King (because of Shannon, course LOL) and had mixed feelings about it. On one hand, there was a character that I had such issues with. It really tainted my feelings for the book – this person seemed so oblivious to the lives of others, of what they were dealing with. But on the other hand, the two other main characters were stellar. And there was one particular scene that has stuck with me for the almost two years since I read it – and probably will for a very long time. It made a big impact on me.

  8. Saw the graphic then ran down to yell about The Serpent King and then saw that you already acknowledged that I was going to yell at you about The Serpent King ? It is just SO good. I feel like I read Legend so long ago that I barely remember it but I read the whole series so I must have liked it haha. And I too have to read most of these other ones, and by most, I mean all.

  9. I adore Carry On!! I haven’t read most of the others on this list, but at this point I’ve decided to stop beating myself up over backlist books and to just read whatever makes me happiest. Basically, I’m trying to get over the FOMO of not having read a book, new or old.

  10. I definitely recommend Confess and Alienated. Legend was really good as well, but I need to read on in that series. I thought about doing this one this week, because there are so many I could list. But with NaNoWriMo going on, I’m trying to spend more time writing if I can! Maybe I’ll come back and revisit this topic on my own in December. Great list! I’ve also read The Serpent King, but I didn’t really enjoy it that much.
