The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch – Readalong Review

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch – Readalong Review

Reviews 26 ★★★★

Kaja over at Of Dragons and Hearts is doing a readalong of The Gentlemen Bastards series, and I decided to jump in. I already owned the book because I meant to participate in the readalong back when Kritika at Snowflakes and Spider Silk had one last July. Obviously that never happened, but this was the perfect opportunity to redeem myself! So, a few things about me and my reading tastes before I start out with this review (they’re relevant to the review, I swear). I used to love epic fantasy and sci-fi when I was younger. Robin Hobb was my ultimate favorite, but I also loved The Wheel of Time series in all its huge, epic glory. But somewhere along the line my attention span apparently lessened – I swear, having children has sucked brain cells right out of my head because I just no longer have the ability to… Read more »

The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine – Review

The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine – Review

Reviews 12 ★★★★½

After reading a few reviews of this book, I just knew it was a ME book and that I needed to read it. I was right. This is my favorite type of fantasy – character-driven with a strong magical presence and a good dollop of action. The book follows Elli, who’s spent her life preparing to be the Valtia. She knows that this will be a great sacrifice – after all, Valtias don’t typically live past thirty because the fire and ice magic within them eventually becomes too powerful to control – but she also knows that her kingdom needs her magic in order to thrive. She believes the sacrifice is worth it. But when the current Valtia dies and the magic refuses to inhabit Elli, her life takes a turn she never expected. She’s willing to do almost anything to bring her magic to the surface, but nothing works,… Read more »

Sunday Post & Giveaways Galore – 1/3/16

Sunday Post & Giveaways Galore – 1/3/16

Sunday Post 11

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on my blog and share news about what’s coming up in the week ahead. Last week on FYFA (and in my life): Hello, everyone! Happy 2016! I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s celebration. We had a low-key holiday at home, playing card and dice games with the family. Oh, and my son and I have been bonding over his new video game – Splatoon. I have found that I LOVE to watch him play – it’s given me something new to work out to, and it makes the time go by even faster than watching Once Upon a Time does. (And he loves the fact that he’s been sometimes getting extra electronics time so I can watch!) I can’t… Read more »

My 2016 Reading/Blogging Challenges

My 2016 Reading/Blogging Challenges

Challenges 32

First of all, if you’re here looking for my comprehensive list of 2016 Reading and Blogging Challenges, you’re in the wrong place. 🙂 Click the link to go there! These are the challenges I plan to participate in in 2016. Let me tell you, it was HARD to come up with this list because there are so many amazing challenges out there – creating that comprehensive list was dangerous! But these are the ones I ended up with: I thought I’d start with the obvious. Since Shannon and I are hosting this one, it would be a little strange if I didn’t plan to participate. The goal of this challenge is to post book related discussions (or getting to know you type discussions work too.) I have LOVED getting to know new bloggers through this challenge and reading everyone’s discussions. Seriously, this is the BEST thing I did in 2015! Goal:… Read more »

2015 End of Year Book Survey

2015 End of Year Book Survey

Let's Discuss, Monthly Recap 29

Jamie over at The Perpetual Page Turner has once again created her annual End of Year Book Survey and I thought I’d join in the fun! 2015 Reading Stats Number Of Books You Read: 165 (actually 167, since I edited two books that aren’t on Goodreads yet)   As I mention all the time, the unrated books are books I edited or proofread in 2015 (since I don’t review those due to the conflict of interest). You can see that I read significantly less than I did the last two years, but I knew that was going to happen since I was a lot more busy this year. First off, I did more editing (those books are included in my total read, of course, but it’s not like I just quickly read the book – and books I edit, I typically read at least three times while working on them). And, secondly,… Read more »
