YA Stereotypes: Love From Afar. Does this Happen in Real Life?

YA Stereotypes: Love From Afar. Does this Happen in Real Life?

Let's Discuss 30

So, lately I’ve been thinking about something that happens A LOT in YA books. Love from afar. Let me give you an example: the sweet, quiet, somewhat socially awkward girl is in love with the star quarterback – who she’s never actually had a conversation with. She spends her school days staring at him from across the classroom (or the lunchroom or the football field) and watches him with awe – and quite a lot of drooling. Of course, there are many variations of this. Sometimes it’s the guy who’s in love with the unattainable girl. Or even a girl with confidence and all sorts of friends who suddenly finds herself tongue-tied when the object of her affection is near, so she’s never actually spoken to him (this was the case in the book I reviewed yesterday). But the common thread is that the girl (or guy) is hung up… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – Authors that Complain

Let's Discuss 55

Okay, so there’s this author that I follow who complains on her blog (and probably elsewhere). A. Lot. She’s a self-published author whose books I’ve really enjoyed, but I have to say that her attitude is starting to sour me on the idea of reading her books. I’m not going to name names because my purpose here is not to call out a specific author, but to discuss an issue that’s frustrated me. But here’s the gist of what’s happening … This author has one book that was a decent success for the self-publishing world. I absolutely LOVED the book, and it inspired me to buy and read ALL of this author’s other books as she’s been releasing them. I think she’s talented and I want to support her. I’m not sure that I ever loved any of the other books quite as much as the first, but I’ve really… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – Why I Wish I Could Blog in Bed

Let’s Discuss – Why I Wish I Could Blog in Bed

Let's Discuss 39

Okay, if I’m being honest I CAN blog in bed (and I’m pretty sure I even have). I mean, right now I’m sitting on the couch with my laptop on my lap – sitting on the bed isn’t much different. But that’s actually not what I meant when I came up with the idea (and title) for this post. What I mean is that I wish I could transfer all of those thoughts that go through my head at bedtime onto the page. Let me explain. I’m often quite the insomniac. I almost never fall asleep in less than a half hour, and I often lay there for an hour or more. And it seems that it’s during this time that I come up with some of my best ideas. I’m laying there, trying to fall asleep, trying to clear my mind so that I can fall asleep, but I… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – I Don’t Read the Way I Used To!

Let’s Discuss – I Don’t Read the Way I Used To!

Let's Discuss 13

In my recent move to WordPress, I had to do a little bit of work to get my reviews to show up in my archives (using the Ultimate Book Blogger plugin, which makes it totally easy to do!). While I was doing this, I found myself examining my reading over the past year and a half – since I’ve been blogging – and I’ve realized that I don’t read the way I used to.  Blogging has definitely changed my reading habits.  In some good and some not so good ways. So, how has my reading changed?  Take a look: [icon name=”fa-heart”] I read A LOT more! This is, for the most part, I very positive change (except for those days that I’m too busy reading to do stuff like feed my kids – yeah, not so good).  I read TONS more than I did before I started blogging. Maybe because I… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – Find a Co-blogger or Go It Alone?

Let's Discuss 2

Image courtesy of Master isolated images / FreeDigitalPhotos.net I’ve been thinking lately about soliciting a co-blogger for Feed Your Fiction Addiction, but I’ve kind of been waffling back and forth on it. On the one hand, it would be nice to take a little bit of the pressure off of myself, especially during times when I have an editing project or a vacation planned or something, but I’m a bit nervous about it. After all, this blog has been my baby for the past year-and-a-half and I’ve worked hard to make it what it is today. I’m proud of how much FYFA has grown in a relatively short amount of time, and I don’t know for sure if I can give up my sense of control. I like the feeling of running “my” blog. Would that change too much if I brought someone else on?Still, would the positives outweigh the negatives? Working… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – Insta-love. Can it ever work?

Let's Discuss 6

“Love is an Open Door” from Frozen.  A lesson about the perils of insta-love!  🙂 If you read my reviews regularly, you know that insta-love is usually a major negative for me. You all know what I’m talking about – boy meets girl and both are instantly drawn to each other. They’ve never felt this way about anyone before. Surely no one else in the world could ever complete them the way that this person they met five minutes ago can. It must be love. It’s a great way to ruin an otherwise excellent book.   But there have been times where insta-love (or something akin to it – an instant connection or attraction) was involved and I found myself enjoying the book anyway. At first I get nervous. I find myself waiting for the horribleness of insta-love to kick in and overshadow everything good in the book. But it… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – All the Feels

Let's Discuss 1

I just finished reading Landline by Rainbow Rowell today (review will be coming soon), and it got me thinking about just how much an amazing author can make me FEEL!  Landline had me running the whole gamut of emotions and it got me thinking about them.  I honestly think that I often feel more from reading than I do from watching TV – heck, sometimes more than I do in real life (at least I feel more emotions packed into a short amount of time than I do on a typical day).  So. Many. Feels.(The pictures are my kiddos.)Laughter – I love a book that can make me laugh out loud.  With Landline, I laughed often at the witty dialogue (and at the main character’s inner thoughts, which were often just incredibly funny).  Another recent read that had me laughing and smiling throughout was Maybe Someday By Colleen Hoover.  Now,… Read more »

Let’s Discuss – How soon do you review?

Let’s Discuss – How soon do you review?

Let's Discuss 7

Okay, so I’ve been noticing lately that my ratings vary somewhat based on how soon I review a book after I’ve read it.  I usually review books relatively quickly once I’ve read them.  Sometimes I have so many feelings about a book that I just have to get them out!  They’re impossible to hold inside! Or sometimes I have to review it right away because I’ve read it for a tour and waited until the last minute to finish it. (I can’t be the only one!)  Of course, reviewing right away means that I won’t forget any of those details that I wanted to point out.  So, it’s best to review right away, don’t you think?  But, here’s the thing – when I review right away, I’m often still on that just-finished-an-awesome-book high.  Which is great!  I mean, if that’s the way I’m feeling, my review should reflect that, right?… Read more »

Need BEA Advice!! Pretty please!

Let's Discuss 5

I’m hoping to be able to go to BEA this year, but I haven’t set anything up yet because I’m nervous about the details.   So, is anyone else going this year?  Have you gone in past years?  (Know someone else who has?  Send them over here, please!) How easy is it to get around?   What hotel should I get a room at?  (Is there anything that won’t cost me an arm and a leg?  Anyone looking for a roommate?) Are there specific events that I should definitely get to?  Anything I should skip? Any other advice you can give me?  I know there’s other stuff I should be asking, but I don’t know where to start! I appreciate any advice anyone can give me – I need that kick in the pants so that I’ll make that final leap and just go!  I really, really want to!!  (But… Read more »

Spam-a-lot – Who comes up with this stuff?

Let's Discuss, Spam 0

Do you ever read through the spam comments that you get on your blog? They can be pretty frustrating, but they can also be a source of great entertainment! I mean, really, who do they think they’re fooling? Since those poor spammers never get a single reply, I thought I’d take a sampling of my spam and respond to their comments here. It’s only fair, right? INSULTING  First, we have the insulting spam. Is this supposed to get my attention? I guess it worked. PRAISING The least you can do if you’re going to spam me is praise my wonderful work!   CONFUSING And then there are those spam comments that are just downright weird and confusing!   Ah, the joys of spam. Since I’ve moved to CommentLuv, I don’t get much of it anymore, but the ones that slip through (on old posts) are so much fun! Who needs… Read more »
