This past week on FYFA (and in my life):
Big news this week!!! I got a three-book publishing deal with Macmillan Children’s!! That’s right—not only do they love my MG, they decided they want to make it into a series!
I’m still working out the full series arc, but my editor and I agree that we need to end the series big. We’re thinking that my MC should probably die in the final book (sorry for the spoilers, but I just have to tell someone). The first book is set to release in January of 2020.
We’ve already started talking book tours, so let me know where you live in the comments and I’ll try to get around to your city!
Here’s what you may have missed on the blog this past week:
- 5 Star Review – Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary
- Why We’ve Banned Books in our Household
- A Change in Focus – Let’s Discuss
- Announcing BookBloggicon: a New Annual Book Event You WON’T Want to Miss!
Book Blogger Birthdays and Blogoversaries:
- Weirdly, there are no blogger birthdays or blogoversaries in April. Go figure.
For Review:
Since I got that publishing deal, I got access to a few really early manuscripts, and I’m SUPER excited to read them! Of course, these don’t have covers yet, but I’m most excited about reading Stephenie Meyer’s long-awaited follow-up to The Host (a personal favorite of mine), The Seeker. I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for this book!
Another one that I’m bursting to tell you about is a top-secret project that Marie Lu is working on. I got chosen as a beta reader, and I’m over the moon with excitement. All I can tell you is that it involves a group of teen sanitation workers who fight in an epic battle against fire-breathing compost monsters. I’ve only read the first 20 pages so far, but it’s fantabulous!
Great Discussions/Goings On Around the Blogosphere:
- Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight tells us about her elaborate pre-reading rituals. Some of these sound a little strange (especially that one that involves cheeseburger-scented candles), but I certainly don’t judge!
- AJ @ Reads All the Things shared her thesis on non-linear narrative structure on her blog (all 285 pages!). She uses some great examples from literature and also manages to pull in a few episodes of Bugs Bunny, which was a fun surprise!
- Since April is National Soft Pretzel Month (along with some other things—you really should check out the list), Daniela @ Nocturnal Devices shares her top 10 YA pretzel books. You’ll never look at this snack in the same way again!

Oh, and in case you haven’t figured it out yet …
April Fools!
Hope you enjoyed my kooky edition of the Sunday Post!
(Those posts listed in the “Here’s what you may have missed on the blog this past week” section are actually past April Fools’ Day posts I’ve put up. Check them out!)
I had only read the first part and was crying tears of joy for you. I am a little sad that about that being an April’s Fool thing, but the rest were extremely amusing. Someday you will announce your book deal for real (I just know it). Kudos for such an elaborate and creative post too.
Someday I’ll be able to post this NOT on April Fools’ Day — though I don’t think I’ll kill off my MC in book three. We all know where that gets you. Oh, and thanks for your awesome bookish ventilator system giveaway. Everybody needs one of those!
Haha, I wondered what your April Fool’s thing would be this year. Is it weird that I kind of expected this when I clicked the post? Clearly, I spend too much time on your blog. Also, now I’m kind of tempted to slap my thesis up on my blog and illustrate it with Bugs Bunny cartoons . . .
I think there’s A LOT of non-linear narrative structure in Bugs Bunny, so you could totally work it in there.
LOL, so very creative – not to mention, you must have put a lot of work into this! I must admit I fell for your book deal, at least for a moment…but the day will come, I’m sure.
(It must be because it’s Easter today, so I tend to forget that it’s April Fools as well…but this is the second prank that actually got me fooled today, if briefly. I’m usually more guarded than this…).
I don’t know why, but I LOVE putting together April Fools’ posts, so I don’t mind spending lots of time on them! I had fun coming up with creative pre-order deals and crazy giveaways!
Oh gosh, you fooled me for a second! I’m down to read about some fire-breathing compost monsters though 😉 YA pretzel books ? If anyone can let me know about a vampire-leprechaun-gorgon-harpy hybrid book, I’d have to read it lmao. This whole post is so creative, I love it!
I could be onto something with that compost monster idea, right? And thank you for being so generous with your giveaway—I’ll have to be sure to tweet you some fantastic hybrid book ideas. 🙂
Ha! I actually thought to myself, “I should go see what Nicole did for April Fool’s Day!” Good ones, all, but I’d really like to see the bookish tax deductions.
I confess that I almost had a giveaway in here for you too, Wendy—I started out saying you were going to give away your students, but that just felt mean. And then I tried to think of something with no guns in schools, but everything I thought of was in poor taste. I eventually ran out of time and gave up!
I’d be happy to give away this chest cold I have right now. Any takers?
Now there’s a Rafflecopter for you! LOL!
I always forget you do this! LOL But I love it. I would totally do a Love, Simon watch-a-thon. How fun would that be??
-Lauren
Wait, you’re not doing it? But I just promised! Darn it all! LOL!
Oh wow!! Congrats!! That is soooo awesome!
And whoa to those manuscripts you’re reading now! That’s insane!!!
Also, I think there’s a mishap in the giveaway you have me listed under! Lol! Not giving away my book sleeve collection. I was giving away The Illuminae Files trilogy but I picked the winner today! Not sure how it came out that I was giving away my book sleeves. Not happening there. Lol!!
But congrats again on the book deal! That is super awesome!
Here’s my STS
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower 🙂
Okay, now I can’t tell if you’re teasing me or not.
Don’t you worry—absolutely nothing in this post is actually happening (including you giving away your book sleeves OR my book deal, unfortunately). Since it’s Easter, you might have only had time to skim the post, but it becomes pretty obvious once you get to the pre-order deals and some of the other giveaways, that NONE of this is true. This is just my April Fools’ version of the Sunday Post. 😉
OMG! You know, I totally forgot what day it was other than Easter! Lol!
🙂
I was so happy for you when I started reading and then I was like….what? Happy April Fool’s Day! Although, you really should get that publishing contract 🙂
Maybe someday I’ll be able to announce something along those lines on a day OTHER than April Fools’!
Congratulations on the book deal, Nicole. That is very cool.
Sorry, Lloyd. I wish I could say this was true, but this was just my April Fools Sunday Post (I changed the title now that the day is over—if you read the pre-order deals and other giveaways and stuff, you’ll notice that something is definitely … weird about this Sunday Post! 🙂
Whoops. My bad. Yours is the 2nd email from yesterday that I fell for. Good one!
It’s more fun if some people fall for it. 🙂
Totally agree!
🙂
Wow, you got a book deal! Wow, that’s the most exciting news I’ve heard in all of this week’s Sunday posts! Super huuuuge congratulations!!
Oh, I wish this was true, but this is my April Fools’ version of the Sunday Post. I even added it to the title today! 😉
Bahaha I am a gullible bird 😀 😀 we can dream! XD
Speaking of which, did you see NetGalley’s April Fool’s?
I didn’t see the NetGalley and I searched and couldn’t find it. If you can, send me a link. (I love April Fools’ posts!)
Omigosh, Nicole! You have me giggle-snorting! This is great! I’m disappointed for you on the book deal and disappointed for us both that The Seeker isn’t really a thing! 😉 I bet you had a great time putting this post together! 😀 Thanks for the giggle!
I know—I waited years to hear that The Seeker was coming. Don’t think it’s ever going to happen, so I guess I’ll just have to dream.
Haha, Nicole, this made me laugh! ? I didn’t fall for it since I came on Monday… But this was great! I’m sure you had a lot of fun putting this together. ?
I added April Fools to the title on Monday so people would realize—I felt guilty on all the congratulations I was getting on my book deal! 🙂
True, true. But at least you know the prank was a success. 😉
🙂
Love the idea of a romance by James Dashner. LOL! If only I could really give that away! 🙂 Fun post!
The Maze Lover would be amazing, I’m sure!
You totes had me going….and I now remember you did this to me last year! I can’t wait for the day when I actually hear you have a book deal!!!!
I hope someday I can give you all REAL book news! 🙂
I knew the giveaways were April Fools, but I thought the book deal was real until I saw the comments!
That’s a good one, I’m a pretty skeptical person! 🙂
Glad I could fool you—even if it was only for a minute. 🙂
OMG I’m so excited to see I’m giving away a pony! Now to figure out the shipping costs…
Well done, Nicole! 🙂
Yeah, those pony shipping rates can be brutal!
This is too funny, I was cracking up!! The Seeker, man that really IS an April Fool’s joke, isnt it? She’s still probably laughing about it. And low key sad I can’t win a Mars cruise, that sounds fun! And I have no idea why the “poorly made paper airplane” tickled me so much, but it had me dying! “Top Ten YA Pretzel Books”, I really want someone to do this now hahha. And one day, that book deal with will be LEGIT, I know it will! ♥
The funny thing is that April really IS National Soft Pretzel month. How is that a thing? I mean, I love them and all, but I don’t think we need a month dedicated to them.
And this is just another example of how we’re twins because one of my favorite things about this post was writing that the gift for Sometimes You Fly was a poorly made paper airplane. You have totally validated me by mentioning it. 🙂
ahahaha to bad I’m behind on visiting the Sunday posts and I read you actual {monday} post or I would have been SCREEEEEAMING at the top of my lungs here on this post! One day Nicole one day soon you WILL get a deal and I know I will be screaming for real!
is the Beta reading for Marie Lu a prank too??? OMG tat would be so exciting
AND YOU PREORDER DREAD NATION!
Me too! I got it yesterday! YAAAAAAAAAY
I’m hoping for the real thing someday!!
I love your April Fools post! And I love that you linked to your previous April Fools posts! Too funny! And that you added your picture in the image, oh my gosh, I love this post so much!! And your pre-order deals are so crazy creative LOL!
And I wish that being paper cut free was the truth! Thank you so much for including me! I did get one a few months ago from construction paper….do you know how much more that hurts?!?!?!?!?! ACK!!!!!! But nothing tops what my Aunt did. This isn’t April Fools, it’s just so horrific. She got a paper cut in her eye from a paper that flew off of her desk. No joke. Her eye doctor gave her special drops and said it would heal but I still shudder thinking about it!!
Such a fabulous post, thanks for all of the laughs, Nicole!
A PAPER CUT IN HER EYE!?!? That sounds truly horrific! I just … can’t … even … think about it…
