The 2019 Book Counting Challenge (and Sad News about the Discussion Challenge)

The 2019 Book Counting Challenge (and Sad News about the Discussion Challenge)

April Fools, Challenges 53

Unfortunately, Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight and I are no longer speaking for various reasons. I don’t want to get into the nitty gritty details, but it started because I still haven’t read The Serpent King and Shannon was pretty angry about it. I’ve been promising her for years that I would read that book, so I can’t exactly blame her. But then the emails started getting weird and spiraling out of control … again, I don’t want to go into too much detail because it’s not fair to anyone. At any rate, because of this, I’ve made the difficult decision to no longer host the Book Blog Discussion Challenge. I know there are going to be a lot of disappointed people because of this, and I’m really sorry. To make up for it, though, I’ve come up with a brand new challenge… The Book Counting Challenge!  This is going… Read more »

APRIL FOOLS! Sunday Post & Giveaways Galore – 4/1/18

APRIL FOOLS! Sunday Post & Giveaways Galore – 4/1/18

April Fools 51

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on my blog and share news about what’s coming up in the week ahead. This past week on FYFA (and in my life): Big news this week!!! I got a three-book publishing deal with Macmillan Children’s!! That’s right—not only do they love my MG, they decided they want to make it into a series! I’m still working out the full series arc, but my editor and I agree that we need to end the series big. We’re thinking that my MC should probably die in the final book (sorry for the spoilers, but I just have to tell someone). The first book is set to release in January of 2020. We’ve already started talking book tours, so let me know where you live in the… Read more »

Announcing BookBloggicon: a New Annual Book Event You WON’T Want to Miss!

Announcing BookBloggicon: a New Annual Book Event You WON’T Want to Miss!

April Fools, Book Events 61

I know that with all the changes to BEA this year, many bloggers are sad at being left out. Because of that, I decided something needed to be done. We needed an extra special event just for us! It wasn’t easy to keep this a secret, but I’m finally able to announce an event that I’ve had in the works for months now: The event will be hosted right in my backyard! Don’t worry, I have a really big yard that backs up to a wetland preserve, and my two next door neighbors have agreed to allow author signing booths to be set up in their yards as well. We will have tents set up in case of inclement weather and plenty of fans to keep our beloved authors cool in the summer heat! You can sign up for a time slot to take a dip in the pool with… Read more »

A Change in Focus – Let’s Discuss

A Change in Focus – Let’s Discuss

April Fools, Let's Discuss 74

So, most of you know that I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately. I had a week where I posted almost nothing and then a week where I went on vacation. This little slump has gotten me thinking that maybe I need to start rethinking my focus on this blog. Are books really that great? I mean, they’re just words on a page – they don’t impact the world all that much. Right now, my country is in a pivotal era. With elections coming up soon, I feel like I should talk more about a major passion that I’ve mostly avoided here on the blog – politics. Let’s face it, this is a critical time, and if each and every one of us doesn’t make our voice heard, we could head in the wrong direction. So for the foreseeable future (until November or so), my posts on this blog… Read more »

Why We’ve Banned Books in our Household

Why We’ve Banned Books in our Household

April Fools, Let's Discuss 61

I realize that this might be a bit controversial, but my husband and I have made kind of a big decision when it comes to our kids. We’ve banned books (hopefully temporarily). Obviously, I love to read, and I feel like reading is great for adults, but lately I’ve started to worry about its effects on my kids. Here’s the thing – we’ve noticed lately that reading has become a big issue in our house. Books have become a time suck and they’ve kind of taken over around here. The kids don’t want to do anything else, and it’s getting a little ridiculous. My husband doesn’t really like to read, and he’s been feeling a little left out when all the kids want to talk about is which cat just died in The Warriors series or whether they’re a Ravenclaw or a Gryffindor. Can he really be expected to sit through conversation… Read more »

5 Star Review – Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary

5 Star Review – Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary

April Fools, Reviews 12 ★★★★★

***NOTE: This review may contain spoilers for the first ten editions of this book.*** I know what you’re thinking.  This edition was released in 2003. What took me so long to review it? I know, you’re totally right. I have to confess that I’ve had this book sitting on my shelf for quite some time and while I’ve occasionally rifled through it and read bits and pieces, I’ve just never been able to work up to reading the whole thing. I mean, let’s face it, at 1623 pages this book is daunting. And it covers some really heavy subject matter – suicide, terrorism, infanticide, drugs – it’s all in there. But, I don’t know why I waited so long. This book was FANTASTIC!! The negatives: Hard to follow sometimes.  I have to admit that there were occasionally times when I had a hard time following the plot. There were so many… Read more »
