This past week on FYFA (and in my life):
This was the last week of Christmas break for my kids, so I’ll be getting back to a normal schedule next week. It seems like time just keeps flying by! We’ve been doing some “winter break cleaning” around here. My husband and younger daughter are redoing the upstairs bathroom—new paint, trim, door and light fixture and a refresh to the cabinets. It’s been quite the project! Meanwhile I’ve been sorting through our monster-mess of a basement, cleaning out old craft stuff and general junk that gets carted down there. And then, of course, as soon as we’re in the middle of big projects, random things decide to break. The sink in the basement started leaking (onto the floor), and the dishwasher suddenly stopped working completely. Oh joy!
I joined a new writers’ critique group at my library this week as well. It will be good to motivate me to actually get things written (hopefully). 🙂
Here’s what you may have missed on the blog since my last Sunday Post:
- January 2019 Discussion Challenge Link-Up & Giveaway
- 2018 End of Year Book Survey (& Year in Graphs!)
- December 2018 Wrap-Up & Best of the Bunch
Book Blogger Birthdays and Blogoversaries:
Here are the birthdays and blogoversaries for this week! I hope you’ll go wish these bloggers well on their special days! Make sure you check out the calendar to see what you might have just missed or what’s coming up. (If you want to be added to the calendar, it’s easy! Just fill out the birthday/blogoversary form.)
- NONE! Apparently everyone starts blogging the first week of January, and the second week just seems way too late! (By the third week, you’ve gotten over that though—there will be events to celebrate next week!)
From NetGalley:
I made sure to grab the next Rick Riordan Presents book because I’m in love with them. Sal and Gabi Break the Universe, here I come!
Great Discussions/Goings On Around the Blogosphere:
- I really need to catch up on discussions—I’m only about halfway through the December ones linked up to the Discussion Challenge!

It always seems like everything breaks at once. Sorry to hear about all your appliance woes, but maybe you’ll get something new and shiny out of it (it could happen). That’s awesome that you joined a critique group. Good luck with all your writing endeavors.
I did get a new shiny dishwasher that actually gets the dishes clean, so that is a plus. Just wish everything didn’t happen at once (and, of course, the dishwasher wasn’t free!).
I think it’s a worldwide curse: everything must break at the same time. A critique group is great to keep motivation – and a writer needs a lot of it.
Happy New Year! 😉

Ps.: Thanks for sharing my giveaway.
Yes, you have to wonder how that happens. These things were all completely unrelated, but they all managed to break as soon as we’re in the middle of another big project. Sigh.
Wow! Sounds like busy times! Clean ups followed by replacements. Never fun when it all happens at once. Wish you all the best of luck in this matter!
Yay for a new read! That’s a new to me one but I hope you enjoy it!
Here’s my STS
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower 🙂
I know, it’s the worst luck!
I hope you enjoy your new critique group! I start back at work tomorrow, and I just do not feel it. LOL It’ll be fine once I’ve adjusted to it again though.

These transition times are always really tough!
I just got my first ‘spring’ cleaning room finished today and all the Christmas decorations packed up, ready for the attic. Now it’s catching up on some comments and blogging and things will be back to normal. I like normal. LOL
Yeah, we got all the Christmas decorations away too. Except the tree. It’s still standing there, all undecorated. 🙂
Why does everything have to break at the same time? Good luck with the cleaning! I’ve been doing a lot of that, too. The majority of the Christmas decorations are down, so I feel productive.
Yes, at least I have felt productive over Christmas break. Just wish the “extra” projects didn’t crop up. I did get a new dishwasher out of the deal (too bad it wasn’t free! 🙂 ).
Happy New Year! I feel exhausted already from all the new year goals and work that needs to be done! Lol. I can see why there are no blogiversaries this time of year. 🙂
Yeah, I thought it was funny that there were SO MANY last week and then none this week. It’s like everyone jumped in on week one and gave up on week two. 🙂
I’m sure once all the household projects get finished you’ll feel a great sense of satisfaction. It’s just the getting there that is a pain! And the writers group sounds fantastic – can’t wait to hear more!

Yes, it’s already feeling good to see things a lot more organized. Just wish we hadn’t gotten some “surprise” projects thrown in there. 🙂
Ooh, it can be really difficult when everything starts to break down at once! I hope you can repair them soon 🙁 But yay for all being productive with cleaning and I hope you are able to enjoy the end of your holidays together before getting back to the school kind of routine 🙂
My recent post: https://oliviascatastrophe.com/2019/01/december-wrap-up-2018/
Yeah, at least we did end up getting a lot done over break, though those “extra” tasks definitely set us back a bit.
It’s hard to get back to normal after the holidays but still so much fun 🙂 Your school break sounds like mine! Good luck with new writers’ critique group! I’ll be resuming my own writing next week as soon as I get some blogging ahead done this week 🙂
I read about your blogging ahead. Sounds like a fantastic plan!
Everything usually breaks at once, huh? I hate that!
Hope this week goes smoothly!
Yes, go figure!
Oh, the joys of home improvement projects. We did a bunch of outdoor projects while the weather was warm and are now deciding what we want to work on inside now that it’s winter. And yes, why does everything always seem to break while you’re busy making improvements? Our oven randomly died right in the middle of the last project we were busy with, lol
It’s some version of Murphy’s Law—start a project and everything else breaks.
Oh noo … of course, that’s a bad timing for things to break ! We are due to redo our bathroom also x) *aherm* dad was fixing something on the washer and while he pulled it out of the closet, the floor’s tapestry(?? no idea how to call it) decided to get caught and rip.. so there’s a huge crack randomly in the bathroom XD
Hopefully all is fixed and good now 🙂
Goodluck with this new group and hopefully the writing ! xx
Oops! We did have an issue with the toilet that was related to the bathroom renovation, but the rest of it was completely random.
Oh no for things breaking! I hope there aren’t any more hidden surprises like that for you guys *fingers crossed*. And we did some winter purging and cleaning around the holidays too, I always feel so better after passing down the boys younger toys to friends or donating them. 🙂
Yeah, I think lots of people go through the kids’ stuff after Christmas because you need to make room for the new stuff. 🙂
