The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news ~ A post to recap the past week on my blog and share news about what’s coming up in the week ahead.
What’s been happening since my last Sunday Post:
Danielle is home from Purdue! We picked Danielle up from Purdue yesterday and she’s home for the summer. It will be nice to have her here for so long!
Author panel for my SCBWI group: My SCBWI network held an author Q&A panel on Wednesday. It was great, except we did both Zoom and in-person, and we couldn’t get the camera into an ideal position and the tech side of things was a little stressful. Still a fun event, though. And I guess we learned some lessons for next time.
(Pssst… if you haven’t seen the cover yet for my book, THE SONG OF ORPHAN’S GARDEN, click here.)
What I Read:
- I read The Secret Language of Birds by Lynne Kelly. Watch for my review of this one tomorrow, but in short, I loved it!
- I finally jumped on the wagon and listened to ACoTaR. I honestly think that if I’d read it when it first came out I would have loved it, but I’ve read so many Beauty and the Beast retellings at this point that they all start to blend together. I will say that my interest picked way up toward the end when things veered away from the original plotline.
Here’s what you may have missed on the blog since my last Sunday Post:
- #IMWAYR: BITE-SIZED REVIEWS OF THE MYSTERY OF LOCKED ROOMS & FREE PERIOD
- APRIL 2024 MONTHLY WRAP-UP ROUND-UP LINK-UP AND GIVEAWAY
- MAY 2024 DISCUSSION CHALLENGE LINK-UP & GIVEAWAY!
Book Haul:
I used to post about the new books I got each week, but I think I stopped because I kept getting behind on taking pics of the new books. But now those books aren’t getting highlighted at all, which feels wrong! So, I’m going to try to update this section at least once in a while, and if I don’t have pretty pictures to share, I’ll just share cover images.
Here are three of the books I’ve gotten recently. I’ll post more next week! I bought PLAY THE GAME and NOT THE WORST FRIEND IN THE WORLD, and I got THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRDS as an ARC at work (thanks PRH!).

I am sorry ACOTAR disappointed you but I get it when we have high expectations because of the book world well, it sometimes doesn’t live to said expectations!
I wouldn’t say that I actively disliked ACOTAR – it was just more that I was hoping to absolutely love it based on everyone’s reactions, and I didn’t get there. There are SO many people who come into work buying this series and raving about it, so it can definitely be hard to live up to that hype. I definitely still liked it, though – especially the last quarter of the book. I’m going to keep reading for sure.
I’ve tried reading ACOTAR a couple of times but I couldn’t get past the first few pages. I sometimes feel like I should try to finish it anyway, just because I’m so curious about the hype. Maybe one of these days… The Secret Language of Birds looks great! I might check it out!
I think that ACOTAR gets way better in the last quarter of the book when it deviates from the original (or at least the Disney?) most extremely. I didn’t dislike the first three-quarters of the book, but it just wasn’t living up to the hype for me. My coworkers tell me book two is their favorite, though, so we’ll see what I think when I get to that one!
Your new books all sound good! I am trying to read some more Middle Grade books this year. I’ll have to remember to check back in for your review of The Secret Language of Birds tomorrow. That’s nice Danielle is home for summer. Have a great week!
I’ve gotten some fantastic books recently! Definitely check out the review of The Secret Language of Birds. It’s up now!
Hey stranger! Glad to see you are enjoying the books. It will be great to have Danielle home. I never went home again (to live) after I left for college so enjoy that time with her.
Hello! I know I’ve been absent from the blogosphere lately. Trying to get back into a rhythm of blogging and commenting – and of course I knew I had to visit you as one of my first Sunday Post stops! 🙂
Enjoy having your daughter home for the summer!
The Secret Language of Birds looks good; I look forward to your review.
Thank you! Since this is probably the last summer she’ll actually be home, I’m enjoying having her here.
And, yes, definitely check out the review of The Secret Language of Birds – it’s up now!
It’s so nice when our children come home. I hope you have an amazing summer together. ACATOR wasn’t my favorite book in that series. Things really picked up with ACOMAF.
My coworkers have all told me that ACOMAF is they’re favorite, so I’m eager to keep reading!
I don’t think Maas is for me. I’ve tried some of her novellas for this series or another. Can’t remember now and I wasn’t impressed. Congrats on your middle grade book cover. Very nice! Hope you enjoy your time with your daughter this summer.
I’ve heard that the second book is where the series really picks up, so I’m going to keep reading. But no series can suit everyone, of course.
Enjoy having your daughter home from Purdue! I hope you both have a great summer.
Thank you!!
I’ve read Throne of Glass and quite enjoyed it – but it certainly didn’t blow me away. I keep meaning to give A Court of Thorn and Roses a go to see what the fuss is about, but haven’t yet got around to it:)). Lovely that your daughter is home for the summer – I’m looking forward to having my grandson back, though we have to wait until the end of June for that to happen as our school holidays are a lot later. Have a great week, Nicole:).
Sometimes all the hype for a series can make it even harder to get into. I definitely didn’t dislike ACOTAR, and I plan on reading the next book – I just didn’t love it as much as everyone else seems to.
I haven’t read ACOTAR but I will have to check it out. Hope you have a great week!
I haven’t read Maas before, but her books seem to be everywhere. I generally like those types of books, but I haven’t had the urge to pick ACOTAR yet. Maybe someday. The Secret Language of Birds sounds really good! I will have to check that one out. I bet Danielle is happy to be home for the summer! I am hoping the summer will mean it will be quieter at work, but we’ll see. Have a great week, Nicole!
I think I would like The Secret Language of Birds. I think I’ll look for it.
