Sunday Post: Book Pre-order Campaigns & Giveaways Galore – 5/10/20

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on my blog and share news about what’s coming up in the week ahead.

This past week on FYFA (and in my life):

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there! I actually totally thought Mother’s Day was next week until yesterday when my husband set me straight. LOL! My daughter’s 16th birthday is on the 14th, and I was sure that Mother’s Day always fell the Sunday after her birthday. Apparently I was wrong.

I’m hoping we can make my daughter’s 16th birthday as special as we can. Actually… it just occurred to me that you could help with that. If you think of it, jump over to her blog for school this week and wish her a happy birthday! Her blog is called Danielle’s Dungeon Diaries (her diary of being quarantined). You can check out her Pokemon artwork in this post and this post. Or you can see what she thought of the books she’s been reading during quarantine. She’ll probably think I’m a big dork for sending you all over there, but I can handle that.  🙂

Here’s what we’ve been up to while safe indoors this week:

  • Online school. We’ll be done on the 18th! (My daughter has her AP test on Tuesday, so send good thoughts and prayers her way—she’s nervous about it!)
  • We watched:
    • The whole family watched Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level. We really enjoyed both of these movies (a lot more than we were expecting to!). We’re discovering that we love action movies with humor.
  • I finished two books this week
    • I read Renegades by Marissa Meyer. My daughter just read the whole series, and I thought it would be fun to read it close to when she did!
    • I listened to Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. Actually, first I started listening to Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus. I knew there were two books, but I didn’t realize the titles were so similar. I got almost halfway through the second book before I realized I was missing something. Oops!! Kinda spoiled the mystery of the first book for myself, but I still really enjoyed it!  🙂  Now I just have to finish the second book.
  • We’ve been planning some junk art! I know that sounds really weird, but my husband has been wanting a welder—he took a class and bought the safety stuff, and now he ordered the welder itself. I told him that for mother’s day, he can make me some garden junk art like one we bought on our vacation in Michigan a few years ago. I saved tons of images of cool junk art on Pinterest, if you’re interested in checking out what I mean. Then I spent lots of time obtaining junk from my neighbors!

Here’s what you may have missed on the blog since my last Sunday Post:

Book Blogger Birthdays and Blogoversaries:

Birthday-150 Blogoversary-150x150

Here are the birthdays and blogoversaries for this week! I hope you’ll go wish these bloggers well on their special days! Make sure you check out the calendar to see what you might have just missed or what’s coming up. (If you want to be added to the calendar, it’s easy! Just fill out the birthday/blogoversary form.)

Book Haul:

Gifted:

When I contacted Aaron Reynolds to ask if there was somewhere local I could get a signed copy of his book and to see if he might be interested in doing a Top Ten Addictions list for the blog, he offered to send me one of his own personal copies! I thought that was incredibly generous, and I got The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter in the mail yesterday!

  1. I can’t wait to see some of this “junk art”. I love seeing people repurpose scrap items, and create something new and amazing. Fingers crossed that your daughter’s AP exam goes well, and welcome summer break? I hope you and yours had a wonderful Mother’s Day, and that you were celebrated properly.

  2. Next weekend i want to binge with the kids Jumanji. My husband and I saw the first but not the second one yet.
I hope you have a great moms day and your daughter has a wonderful birthday! It can not be easy to not be able to celebrate with her friends. I can’t wait for all this to be over.

Rex Dexter book looks so cute!

Have a great week , Nicole! Stay Safe and Happy Reading! xx

  3. Happy Mother’s Day Nicole! And Happy early Birthday to your daughter! Sounds like things were relatively nice for you last week! Have things been opening yet by you? I know Illinois near Missouri was opening up this week, I believe or last week? I know it was around the same time as my state, just not my county! Lol. I miss going to Anderson’s! I haven’t been at all this year because the one signing I planned to go to was happening on a day of predicted snow and there was no way I was driving that far in that kind of weather. Hoping things mellow down enough for events to happen so I can hopefully attend one again!

Nice new read too! Such a fun title! I hope you will enjoy it!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

    • Some stores have been able to open with pick-up, but that’s really the only thing that’s opened up as of now. Supposedly at the beginning of next month, more will open including outdoor seating at restaurants. Still don’t honestly know that we’ll go many places though. Hopefully you’ll be able to get back out to Anderson’s someday soon!!

  4. Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you are having a nice day. Happy upcoming birthday to your daughter! Not the best of times to be young and having a birthday, especially one as big as 16, but I hope it’s special for her. I hope your daughter does well on her AP test. We still have until the end of May to go with schooling. Which reminds me, my daughter needs to take her spelling test today . . . We didn’t get to it this past week and it’s due tomorrow.

We are still making our way through the Marvel Superhero movies. I haven’t seen the Jumanji movies–not the ones since the first Robin Williams one, anyway. I really want to though. I think my daughter would enjoy them. My husband not so much. LOL

I hope you have a good week, Nicole. Stay safe and well.

  5. Happy birthday to your daughter and happy Mother’s Day to you! I need to watch the second Jumanji movie soon! Thank you for all the work you do putting together preorder incentives and giveaways!

  6. Happy Mother’s Day! Hope you had a good one. And it kind of crept up on me too- i just realized towards the end of the week that it was today and had to scramble a bit. 🙂

Good luck with your daughter’s AP test. We’re getting close to being done here too and it’s bittersweet. Such changed circumstances to end the school year!

    Renegades sounds fun!

  7. Wow, so much going on for you! My son is in high school and they still haven’t organized any obligatory online distance learning. He’s been off school since middle of March, that’s almost 2 months now. Hope your daughter is enjoying her blogging too and soon to be end of school year. Isn’t it cool when authors send personal autographed copies?

  8. Happy Birthday to your daughter! And good luck to her on her AP test! Speaking from experience, it will be a wonderful feeling once it’s finally over! (Although to be fair, I never took an AP during a pandemic, so maybe things are different because of that).

Junk art is so cool! I’ve seen it before, but I’d love to actually buy a piece of junk art for myself. There’s something so wonderful about seeing all these scraps of metal turned into a work of art! It actually reminds me of a really great book called Scumble by Ingrid Law. That book features junk art quite a bit!

I’m actually really interested in reading Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus now! I heard it features an adopted character with a disability, which sounds fantastic to me!

Thank you so much for mentioning my post! It’s something I’m very passionate about, so I appreciate you sharing it with everyone!

Happy Mother’s Day and I hope you have a wonderful week!

  9. Happy Birthday to your daughter! The consolation? She can tell her children and grandchildren that she celebrated her 16th birthday in during The Coronavirus Lockdown of 2020… Yes! We watched the 2 Jumanji films recently and found them a real tonic – I loved the humour alongside the action/adventure and we realised there aren’t all that many films who manage to execute that dynamic really successfully. Have a great week, Nicole:))

  10. Happy Mother’s Day to you, and hope your daughter’s testing goes well. How very lovely of the author to send you a signed copy from his stash! Have a great week! 🙂

  11. I commented on her blog as it’s a brilliant idea Nicole! I did some “mini me” posts years ago with my daughter as a host lol
    Have a good week!

  12. Happy Mother’s Day to you and Happy 16th birthday to your daughter. We finish homeschooling on the 20th and I can’t wait! My husband enjoys welding, and I think it’s a neat hobby. Your Mother’s Day gift sounds like it will be a fun one! I love the Jumanji movies and am also a big fan of action with humor. I hope you’re having a fantastic week!

  13. I love the Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle movie! I actually like it a lot more than the original. Need to see The Next Level. I also love Rennegades. Meyer writes some cool stuff. Check out the Lunar Chronicles if you haven’t already. Have a great week!

  14. I hope you had a good mothers day and enjoyed celebrating your daughters birthday as much as you could! We had to celebrate my sisters 18th indoors and I think she was quite pleased in the end but it was a lot of meticulous planning because we wanted it to live up to the milestone. I have only seen the first ‘new’ Jumanji and it was better than I expected it to be as well 🙂
